So-Called Artists in the Mayday Records Stable
INFANT MORTALITY RATE has been making noise in Houston since the release of  the cassette 'big secrets' in 1991. Over the years IMR has constructed visually interesting electronic noise makers and circuit-bent toys & radios. Studio recordings tend to be collages of sounds, found and new, primarily using Samplitude, to produce tracks of often moody complex soundworks. IMR's live performances are rather infrequent. Mr. IMR started performing in the late 80's as part of the noise band Turmoil in the Toybox, then later joined the punk/psych band Sad Pygmy for a long stretch in the 90's. In the summer of 2006 IMR played theremin as part of the live band for the Ornery Theatre production of the Elmer Rice play The Adding Machine. Frybrain comes out when no one is around and messes with our stuff. The result is beat oriented, visceral, and really screws with your head. He calls his style "scraped and chewed" and says it's his attempt to make chopped and screwed audio collage. To us it sounds old-school, like very early Pain Teens. So far, he's appeared on the Cataclastic Fractures volume II comp CD from Deadline Recordings (sounding nothing like the above description, btw), and our own Sorrow Is Always Black mini-CD. More tracks are in the can, and we're eagerly waiting for his medications to wear off so he can finish those up and release a full-length disc, which he tentatively titles Dope Opera. RARE HUNGRY BIRDS was the duo of IMR and the late Ayn Morgan, a founding member of the elusive downercow. Focusing on multi-sensory art, in 2007 they created an abstract audio/visual exploration called the Voting Booth, which was on display at the Artcar Museum Sep. through Dec. 2007; a re-defined Voting Booth 2.1 which traveled around a bit; and a retablo entitled Is That You, Uncle Charlie? as part of a fund-raising silent auction for the Lawndale Art Center. Their sole recording can be found on the rare mini-CD Voting Booth 2.1 (handmade, limited to 50 burns).
